Course Description

The YouSTUDY English for Young Learners Program is suited for students aged 12 to 15 to help children develop their English language skills in a supportive educational environment combined with engaging activities and excursions.

Students can enjoy their time in a different country while learning new language skills and experiencing the Cairns tropical lifestyle. Students will improve their core English skills while enjoying excursions like Aboriginal cultural afternoons and visits to local attractions like the Great Barrier Reef.

Educational Outcomes

The YouSTUDY English for Young Learners Program is specifically designed for children in their early educational years, focusing on age-appropriate, interactive strategies that foster enjoyment and engagement. By introducing simple vocabulary and sentence structures, the program aims to build a strong foundation for future language development, ensuring that learning remains accessible and relevant for young students.

Living with an Australian family is also a key component of the program, providing children with daily opportunities to practise their English skills in real-life situations. Through interaction with native speakers, young learners gain cultural insights and develop practical communication abilities that complement classroom learning.

Course Structure

Young Learners English and Cultural Immersion Program Structure

The program structure for Young Learners is specifically designed to achieve a balance by dedicating structured morning sessions to English instruction and reserving the afternoons and full days for cultural immersion activities and excursions.

English Instruction

The English portion of the program is built on high-quality communicative English classes delivered by experienced teachers. These classes focus on improving core language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with the goal of rapidly improving the students’ fluency, accuracy, and confidence.

In a typical weekday schedule, 20 hours of Immersive English Classes with an Australian Teacher are held during the morning session, generally from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm. The materials used in these classes are carefully curated to introduce simple vocabulary and sentence structures that are relatable and align with the developmental stage of learners aged 12–15 years old, aiming to build a solid foundation for future language development.

Cultural Immersion and Activity

The program offers a diverse range of activities and excursions designed to immerse students in the unique culture and natural environment of Cairns, while providing authentic opportunities to practise their English skills.

These cultural immersion activities typically fill the afternoon slot (1:00 pm to 4:30 pm) or take up entire days

  • Australian Animals, Habitats, Plants and Aboriginal Culture. Students will learn about the diversity of Australian wildlife and ecosystems, as well as gain insights into Aboriginal culture.
  • Cairns Aquarium and Turtle Rehabilitation Tour: The visit to Cairns Aquarium includes a special Turtle Rehabilitation Tour, allowing students to see native marine life up close and understand conservation efforts.
  • Day Trip to Green Island: This full-day excursion features a glass bottom boat experience and an informative reef presentation, offering students the chance to explore the Great Barrier Reef’s marine environment.
  • Education Session with an Animal Keeper: Students will participate in an education session led by an animal keeper, where they can learn about and view reptiles in a safe and controlled setting.
  • Photo with a Koala: Participants will have the opportunity to have their photo taken with a koala, creating a memorable Australian experience.
  • Visit to Rusty’s Markets, Shopping and City Tour: Try Australian fruits at a popular local market, shopping opportunities and a guided city tour
  • Farewell BBQ: To conclude the program, there will be a farewell BBQ, providing a relaxed setting for students to celebrate their achievements and socialise with new friends.

This structure ensures that the English instruction provides the foundational skills in the mornings, while the cultural activities in the afternoon provide interactive, age-appropriate opportunities to apply those skills in real-world contexts in a different country.
